Seacoast Yoga and Culinary Retreat on PEI

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES:

Seacoast Yoga and Culinary Retreat on Prince Edward Island
AUG 28-SEPT 1, 2017

This 5 day (4 night) retreat is the perfect end of summer getaway and opportunity to relax and soak up the natural beauty and gifts of Canada’s East Coast island paradise.

Topping the CNN list of places to visit this summer, PEI contains a stunning array of natural, cultural and culinary attractions and is the perfect spot to unwind and reconnect before the hustle and bustle of September begins.  Our intention for this retreat is to combine the balancing and energizing benefits of a daily yoga and meditation practice with ample opportunities to slow down, rest and relax so that you can fully savour the beauty around you and the deliciousness of this foodie paradise.  PEI may be (deservedly so) famous for its lobster, oysters and mussels (oh, and potatoes!) but over the last decade, the island’s dedication to supporting local food has made it a foodie destination.  Retreat participants will experience the ultimate “field to table” experience when we partake in celebrity chef Michael Smith’s (PEI’s official food ambassador)  “The Feast” at the renowned FireWorks restaurant.

The Inn at Spry Point, located on the tip of PEI’s eastern shores, is our private and secluded setting for this retreat – a true coastal sanctuary perched atop PEI’s quintessential rocky red cliffs and surrounded by breathtaking views of the Atlantic’s deep blue waters.  The 110 acre peninsula with its pastoral ambiance, fields rolling down to the sea, and proximity to white sandy beaches is the perfect spiritual setting for peaceful mornings filled with meditation and yoga practice and lazy afternoons strolling the many beaches and hiking trails surrounding Spry Point.  Evenings will be capped by culinary surprises only PEI can offer.

Prince Edward Island may be Canada’s smallest province but it packs a passionate punch – mixing rich tradition with an increasingly vibrant and diverse population. Whether you are a repeat visitor or exploring PEI for the first time you will be enchanted by the warm and gracious hospitality that “Islanders” are known for and the beautiful simplicity of life they create.

Retreat Includes:

  • 4 nights accommodation at The Inn at Spry Point
  • Full access to Spry Point grounds, private oceanside trails, right-of-way access to shoreline beaches
  • Sumptuous and healthy vegetarian meals made with local ingredients
  • The Feast: A special ‘Farm to Fork” culinary excursion to Chef Michael Smith’s Fireworks restaurant at The Inn at Bay Fortune (see below for details/dietary restrictions)
  • Daily guided meditation and yoga practice with Joshua Lewis
  • Creative Intention Setting and Reflective Writing Session with author Trevor Corkum
  • Surprise samplings of local artisan food, wine and beer
  • Evening bonfire on the beach
  • Unlimited unwinding and relaxation

*You’ll have plenty of free time to nurture yourself with a book, take a walk in nature, explore the surrounding local amenities or simply do your own thing. All scheduled activities are optional.

Additional Costs:

  • Travel to PEI + local transportation to The Inn at Spry Point

(We suggest that you rent a vehicle for your stay on PEI, giving you access to the surrounding beaches, parks, and attractions. Our recommendation for travel from the airport to the inn is to contact one of the taxi/limo/transport companies at this link. The Island is pretty small and most taxi companies will take you anywhere you want to go – even out of the city limits. We suggest pre-booking if you can. When you’ve booked your flight, please send us the details and we are happy to help arrange carpooling/sharing with other retreat participants arriving around the same time.)

  • Shuttle to The Feast ($15-20 approximately)
  • Alcoholic Beverages (onsite and at The Feast)
  • Optional Activities:
Bike, Sea Kayak and Stand-Up Paddleboard Rentals
    World Class Golf Courses
On-site Massage Therapy with RMT Karen Wingrove

Location: The Inn at Spry Point

Relax on the porch in muskoka chairs over a glass of wine paired with local PEI artisanal cheeses and then be lulled to sleep by the gentle ambiance of waves washing over nearly four kilometers of iconic red coastline.  Come to The Inn at Spry Point and learn what the locals know, the secret to getting ahead is knowing where to get away.

THE FEAST

The Firework’s chefs create a new menu daily using ingredients from their organic farm and herb gardens and from a roster of Prince Edward Island farmers, fisherfolk, foragers and culinary artisans. The evening begins at 6pm with an epic Oyster Hour – an interactive exploration of the Inn’s whimsical grounds and gardens while indulging in an all-you-can-slurp Oyster Bar and tantalized by the sights and smells of the outdoor fire-pits, smokehouse and farm stands.  At 7pm, the Feast begins.  It will be served family style at long butcher-block tables overlooking beautiful Bay Fortune. The menu includes freshly baked wood-oven bread, a “taste-of the island” charcuterie board, smoked fish, local seafood chowder, a famously wild organic salad and best of all….wood roasted meats, fish and vegetables all prepared before your very eyes.  Just make sure you save room for an array of delicious and freshly baked desserts!

Travel and Local Attractions:

During the summer months, many direct flights are available to Charlottetown via domestic and international points of departure including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Boston.  Further information can be found at flypei.com

The Inn at Spry Point is located (by car) approximately one hour from the Charlottetown airport.

We recommend that you rent a car for the duration of your stay on the island to maximize and take advantage of your  experience.  PEI is a small island but incredibly rich in its diversity.  We’ve purposefully structured this retreat during the week with the hope that you will be able to use one (or both!) of the weekends that bookend our time together.  Whether you continue your culinary adventure along PEI’s Culinary Trail or in search of the island’s best lobster roll; sipping raspberry cordial while watching Anne: The Musical (the longest running annual musical in the world); strolling the streets of Charlottetown with a Cows ice cream cone in hand; or taking an afternoon nap on the ocean sand dunes of Brackley Beach – there are infinite possibilities to customize your getaway.  We are happy to provide recommendations and insider tips for your stay.  Here are some of our favourite places, including ones within a short distance from our retreat:

Nearby:

Beaches and Parks

Basin Head Provincial Park/Singing Sands Beach: A fine, white sand beach that stretches for many km.  The warm waves are ideal for swimming and a perfect spot for families.

Sally’s Beach Provincial Park: The Inn at Spry Point is located steps away from Sally’s Beach Provincial Park. One of the best beaches in PEI. The park is comprised of almost 40 acres, an open field brings you to a Pavilion shelter with public washrooms, an outdoor heated shower and boardwalk to the expansive stretch of beach fronting Spry Cove.

Panmure Island Provincial Park: One of the most popular long white sandy beaches on Points East Coastal Drive. The Panmure Island Lighthouse, the Island’s oldest wooden lighthouse, sits at the end of the causeway and is open to visitors. Climb the tower for spectacular views.

Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine (The Magdalen Islands): If you are looking for an incredibly unique experience to cap off your getaway, we highly recommend taking a couple of days to experience “The Maggies”.  While on the Eastern shores of PEI, you are within a ferry ride away from one of the East Coast’s hidden gems.  A small archipelago in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, belonging to the province of Quebec, they include a dozen islands, seven of which are inhabited.  People come especially to experience the unique culture of the local people and the unmatched scenic splendour.

Other Island Treasures:

Charlottetown: Canada’s Birthplace, this vibrant, walkable city is bursting with incredible restaurants and shopping, historic buildings and cultural events.  For you foodies, make sure you visit Victoria Row.

Green Gables: All things Anne!  When the novel Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908, most people could only dream of visiting its magical setting. As the book became popular around the world, it’s likely that many readers had no idea where Prince Edward Island was. They may have even wondered, “Is it a real place?” Today, millions of the book’s fans have made the trip to PEI and discovered the land that captivated Anne in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s stories. And for those who just can’t get enough of their favourite red-headed girl, or the woman who created her, there are Anne-related attractions all over the Island.

Prince Edward Island National Park (Greenwich Sand Dunes):  Escape into a truly unique landscape. Experience a sense of awe and serenity as you take in the towering parabolic dune system and pristine white sand beaches at Greenwich.

The Evangeline Region: For a taste of one of the Island’s founding cultures, drive a few minutes to the west where Prince Edward Island’s vibrant Acadian culture thrives.

Victoria-by-the-Sea: PEI is full of small seaside towns, each with their individual charms and treasures, but this is our favourite.  Home to some great restaurants, local artisan galleries and shops and The Victoria Playhouse – you won’t want to leave this cozy spot.
